En juin 1937

Paul HARRIS, qui vient d’avoir 69 ans, se rend une nouvelle fois en France pour assister à la Convention de Nice. Jean l’accompagne.

Paul HARRIS assiste à Edinburgh à ce qui devait être sa dernière réunion en Ecosse, un lunch au R.C. Edinburgh.



En 1941

Paul se rend avec son épouse en Floride, visitant le Rotary-club de Lakeland (le couple a invité à dîner les cadets aviateurs d’origine écossaise) puis celui de Leesburg.

En 1942

Paul assiste à la Convention de Toronto
Il lit lui-même son message.
Jean HARRIS fait une courte déclaration.

“It is indeed a great pleasure to be here and meet all the Rotarians. It is nice to meet the men who helped to build up this great organization. As Paul has often said, he was at the beginning of the stream, but now it is a great tributary. Everyone of Rotary has been pouring in their strength and their knowledge and their love into this great organization. Without that, it would not have been anything. I certainly wish the convention a bountiful success. For things that are fundamental and true and real and spiritual, which, after all, are the greatest things in any organization throughout the world, we must acknowledge the Eternal Power. God be with us to give us wisdom, judgment, discernment, love for all, under all conditions.”

En 1943

Paul assiste également à la Convention de Saint Louis et lit lui-même son message.
Jean HARRIS fait à nouveau une courte déclaration.

”It is indeed a deep privilege to be here once again at this convention (we thought probably we might not be able to come this year), especially to have the privilege of meeting our beloved friends, Fernando and Mrs. Carbajal. They are friends of long standing. We met them in South America, and their courtesies and their gracious friendliness can never be forgotten, not only in their beautiful city of Lima, Peru, but also in all of South America. I think I came back from South America a little more polite, a little more gracious. I think I was inclined to be hurried and say, "Well, what now?" But they would stand back and graciously tell me how to be more polite and more gracious, and I not only thank them for that, but also for their other contributions. I see many flags here today from all the lands, but I miss the faces of their representatives. I miss their friendship and their love and their individual contributions. We cannot do without these. God hasten the day when we shall again meet all those clear friends from those lands, whose hearts are heavy today because they are not here. We hope that God will deal with us in mercy; that we seek His wisdom and His understanding and His knowledge; that we shall do so quietly, calmly and prudently, and with wisdom and mercy and in love. We hope for that day there is a day of hope always, and I don't think it is very far away. Let us, then, pray for that day soon, with victory for the allies, when we may again meet in peace and love and in harmony”.

Paul et Jean HARRIS louent une villa à Albion dans le Michigan.

En juin 1944

Lors de la convention à Chicago (la dernière à laquelle assista Paul HARRIS), les délégués de la République Dominicaine décorent Paul de l'Ordre héraldique de Christophe Colomb "for his outstanding service to mankind" .

En décembre 1945

Paul et Jean HARRIS se rendent comme chaque hiver à Tuskegee (Alabama) afin de profiter d’un climat plus clément.
Au départ de Chicago, Paul ne se sent déjà pas très bien en montant dans le train et, peu après leur arrivée, il apprend le décès de Sylvester SCHIELE un des quatre membres fondateurs du Rotary.



Au tout début de l'année 1946

Paul attrape la grippe.

Chesley R. PERRY, membre du Rotary club de Chicago et secrétaire général du Rotary de 1910 à 1942, se rend à Tuskegee et annonce que Paul est bien soigné mais est tout de même affaibli : « Il connaissait des problèmes pulmonaires depuis de nombreuses années et ne dormait, ni ne se nourrissait convenablement. »

Les HARRIS rentrent à Chicago le 28 mars 1946.



En juin 1946

Membre d’Inner Wheel

Jean est nommée membre d’honneur du Club Inner Wheel d’Edinburgh en raison de sa naissance et de son enfance passée dans cette ville.

Répondant depuis Chicago à la présidente Mme WINKLER, Jean en a accepté immédiatement l'honneur :

"I have been keeping in touch with Inner Wheel activities through the Rotary Service Magazine. Paul and I are amazed and thrilled at the magnitude of its benefactions. It seems miraculous after all you have been through. (A reference to WWII) May God bless your endevour".



En septembre 1946

Paul et Jean donnent de leurs nouvelles dans THE ROTARIAN

Après avoir vécu quelque temps dans un hôtel à Chicago, puis vendu « Comely Bank » à un professeur d’université, Jean retourne vivre en Ecosse avec un frère et une sœur.

Dans le numéro de février 1950 du Magazine THE ROTARIAN (45ème anniversaire du Rotary) paraît un article de Jean HARRIS.

Elle raconte beaucoup de souvenirs : sa rencontre avec Paul au printemps 1910 ainsi que diverses anecdotes…

Jean rends visite aux Rotariens réunis pour l’Assemblée internationale à Chicago

En juin 1955

A la Convention du 50ème anniversaire à Chicago, la veuve du Fondateur est présente; elle a été nommée Honorary Chairman of the Ladies Host Club Executive Committee (Honorary Co-chairman: Mrs Silvester SCHIELE, veuve du premier président du R.C. Chicago).

DURANT LA PREMIERE SESSION PLENIERE, UNE « STANDING OVATION » LUI A ETE RESERVEE LORS DE SA MONTEE SUR LA SCENE, RETROUVANT AINSI LES ANCIENS PRESIDENTS DU R.I. ET LEURS EPOUSES TANDIS QU'UN PORTRAIT DE PAUL HARRIS ETAIT PROJETE SUR LE GRAND ECRAN.

Chesley PERRY, adressa ces mots :

“The year 1910 is a historic one in Rotary, the year the National Association of Rotary Clubs was founded, but it was also the year that Jean Thomson, a charming Scottish lassie, became the bride of the Founder of Rotary. Paul is gone, but we are happy that Jean is still with us, as charming as ever. It is a privilege and a high honor to be permitted to present to you Jean, Mrs. Paul P. Harris."

Lorsqu'elle s'installe définitivement à Edinburgh, des Rotariens avec qui elle restera en contact jusqu'à la fin de ses jours l'accueillent à bras ouverts.

En août 1962

Elle assiste à une dernière réunion rotarienne en 1962 pour le Jubilé du R.C. Edinburgh.

Le président John MILLER lors de son voyage à Edinburgh lui rend visite..

Paul avait raconté en 1935 comment les parents de Jean, âgés tous deux d’environ 90 ans avaient dit adieu à leur fille et étaient retournés en Ecosse pour être enterrés dans le sol natal. Ils avaient pourtant vécu 25 ans aux Etats Unis mais n’avaient jamais réussi à se sentir américains. La mère de Jean voulait notamment être enterrée près de sa propre mère. Ainsi ce sont donc trois générations de filles enterrées côte à côte !

"So here we are at the end of our journey and Jean and I are sitting at our fireside drinking a cup of tea. One who marries a Scottish lady must acquire the habit of sitting at the fireside and drinking black tea and indeed it is a delightful break in the cares and duties of the day. If the tea is good and the fire burns merrily, one enjoys recreation and rest. It's a good way to end the day." Paul P. Harris


En 1976

Une rose portant son nom est créée par Alex COCKER (Rotarien d'Aberdeen) à la demande d'Axel WEST ancien président du R.C. Edinburgh.

It is a short growing plant, and a very effective one, with double flowers of bright orange salmon shaded peach yellow. A really attractive short bedding rose excellent for cutting in between Hybrid Tea and Floribunda.

En 1978

En avril 1978, le R.C. St Louis et le R.C. Edinburgh font réaliser une plaque commémorative en hommage à Jean Thomson l'épouse du fondateur du Rotary International pour sa maison natale d'Edinburgh

En 1997

Alors que les derniers préparatifs étaient en cours pour la Convention RI 1997 à Glasgow, en Écosse, le Rotary-club de Braids fondé en 1972 a été choisi par les organisateurs pour la restauration de la tombe de Jean HARRIS.

Luis GIAY, Président en exercice du Rotary International (et d'autres responsables du Rotary International) ont fait savoir qu'ils souhaitaient visiter le dernier lieu de repos de la veuve de Paul Harris à quelques 30 miles d’Edinburgh. Le club de Braids a décidé de commémorer la tombe de Jean en plaçant une plaque à l'entrée du cimetière

En 2005

Pour marquer le centenaire du Rotary une délégation de Rotariens écossais conduite par Gordon McIANALLY, Président du R.I.B.I. s’est rendue sur la tombe de Jean afin de lui rendre hommage
