VILLEGIATURE A TUSKEGEE
 
1) DISPARITION DE SYLVESTER SCHIELE
En décembre 1945, Paul et Jean HARRIS se rendent comme chaque hiver à Tuskegee (Alabama) afin de profiter d’un climat plus clément.
Au départ de Chicago, Paul ne se sent déjà pas très bien en montant dans le train et, peu après leur arrivée, il apprend le décès de Sylvester SCHIELE.

Décès le 17 décembre 1945 de Silvester SCHIELE à 75 ans

Paul HARRIS devient de ce fait le seul survivant des 4 fondateurs.
Sylvester avec Paul peu de temps avant son décès.

3) EN JANVIER 1946
Paul répond favorablement à l’invitation du Rotary-club d’Eufaula, petite ville de l’Alabama, à proximité de Tuskegee.

5) AU TOUT DEBUT DE L'ANNEE 1946, PAUL ATTRAPE LA GRIPPE.
Chesley R. PERRY, membre du Rotary club de Chicago et secrétaire général du Rotary de 1910 à 1942, se rend à Tuskegee et annonce que Paul est bien soigné mais est tout de même affaibli : « Il connaissait des problèmes pulmonaires depuis de nombreuses années et ne dormait, ni ne se nourrissait convenablement. »

Les HARRIS rentrent à Chicago le 28 mars 1946

EN FEVRIER 1946 IL REÇOIT LA MEDAILLE DU MERITE DU R.C. CHICAGO
Après avoir reçu la distinction, il déclara :
« I am grateful to Chicago for all Chicago has done for me…”

CONVENTION D'ATLANTIC CITY
37e convention 2-6 juin 1946
“A timely demonstration of international friendship in action”

C'est la 3e convention à Atlantic City (1920 : 7 213 participants ; 1936 : 9 914 participants)

(10 958 participants de 40 pays dont 10 060 Américains et 10 Français)

275 000 Rotariens ; (3 173 clubs représentés sur 5 808 existants)
Après les 2 dernières conventions particulièrement intimistes, l’assistance à cette convention d’Atlantic City, Convention d’Après Guerre, est proche d’atteindre le record observé en 1930 pour la Convention du 25ème anniversaire du Rotary

Paul HARRIS y met en exergue TROIS HOMMES DU ROTARY :
  • le premier était Chesley PERRY,

  • les deux autres qui en mars 1921 eurent pour mission d’exporter le Rotary en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande : James Wheeler DAVIDSON et J.Layton RALSTON alors président du Rotary-club d’Halifax et qui allait plus tard devenir ministre de la Défense et ministre des Finances.
«Glancing back through my anniversary messages of the past, it seemed to me that I had covered every inch of the ground; that I had told everything I knew. Then the thought came to me that I had omitted the question Rotarians most frequently ask me: "When you founded Rotary, did you think that it would come to anything like this?"

My answer to that question is, "No." My thoughts on that day 42 years ago this month when the first Club first met, were far from any such thing. Recall Andrew Carnegie's answer to an adoring lady who asked him if he did not think that his great work was inspirational: "No, madam, I think it was more perspirational than inspirational."

So it was in Rotary. There was no inspired beginning. Young businessmen, mostly from the country, came in response to my call. Unacquainted with city life, we gathered together to help and befriend each other. We had been lonesome and we had found a cure for lonesomeness. We looked forward to meetings as a traveler in a desert looks forward to oases. We banished "Mister" and used first names. Silvester Schiele suggested photographs in our roster and the reading of papers on our respective businesses. Harry Ruggles contributed Club singing.

My plan for our Club provided that only one member of each business or profession would be eligible for membership. We would thus be able to enjoy the fellowship and also to help each other in our respective vocations. The Club grew by leaps and bounds, and representatives of different nationalities, religions, and political faiths came in. Complete tolerance prevailed… »
“If I was the architect, Chesley R. Perry was the builder.
He is to be credited with as much of the results as any other man.

A member of the Chicago Club, he was elected Secretary of the National Association of Rotary Clubs when it was formed in 1910. He served, as my readers well know, as Rotary's Secretary from then until 1942, meanwhile founding and long editing this magazine.

And then there were men like the late James W. Davidson, of Canada, who with his countryman Colonel J. Layton Ralston, "planted" Rotary in the Antipodes. Later when Jim's health and strength were failing, he spent three years in completing the span of the world, bringing Rotary to many more lands.

After reporting to Rotary International's Board in Chicago, Jim returned to Canada and died”...
